How to Properly Clean Your Windows: Our Tried-and-True Cleaning Process

Published on

Windows are vital to your home’s beauty and comfort; they provide a glorious view of your outdoor space, protect the inside of your home from the elements and they let in sunlight to brighten up your house. Because they are so important to a home, they go through a lot of action. It’s important to keep your windows clean so that continue to enhance your home.

Window glass can get dirty pretty fast, even sooner with little hands or pets in the home, but luckily glass cleaning is pretty simple. Many Pella Windows and Doors windows have easy-clean features that also make it painless to clean the exterior of your windows from inside your home, too. Looking for a simple, new window cleaning process? Here’s what Pella Windows and Doors recommends:

  1. Begin by brushing off your window sill with a small broom or brush. The dirt and dust that accumulates on the sill and ledges will remain there for a long time otherwise, and brushing will also prevent smearing on the glass later on. Do not use the same cleaning rag that you will eventually use to clean the glass!
  2. Run your vacuum’s dusting brush attachment along the side of your window screen that faces inside. You can also use this vacuum piece to suck up any leftover dirt and dust along your sills.
  3. Use a premixed vinegar-based cleaning solution, or an ammonia-free glass cleaner like Windex® or Sparkle® to get your glass clean. You can make your own vinegar-based solution by mixing one-part white vinegar to 10 parts water. Then you can add the cleaner to a clean, lint-free cloth or paper towel and wipe down your glass from several different directions for the best clean.
  4. After the cleaning, let your windows air dry and then rinse your glass with clean water if you see streaks.

There are more tips, too! We suggest that you clean your windows on a cloudy day because the sun will dry the cleaning solution too fast and leave streaks on your glass. Also, our Pella Windows and Doors professionals select microfiber cloths since they are the least likely to leave tiny particles behind.

Take care of your attractive view, protection barrier and light source by keeping your windows clean throughout the year.
